I feel very strongly about writing this review because Humor and Madness is, without a doubt, one of the best books I’ve read in the past 20 years. I finished it in just 24 hours because it was so good—I simply couldn’t put it down. From the very first page, I was laughing out loud so hard that the book completely took me by surprise. You’ll be hooked the moment you start reading.

I couldn’t believe this was Thomas Hall’s first book. He comes charging out of the gate with a story that’s sharp, funny, and brilliantly original. His imagination shines on every page as he takes readers on a crazy, unforgettable ride filled with humor, chaos, and a satirical look at modern society.

The main character, Franklin May, is a journalist with a knack for diving headfirst into life’s absurdities. He’s fearless, hilarious, and oddly relatable, especially in his obsession with aliens. I absolutely loved his character!

But what impressed me even more was Hall’s portrayal of Miller, Franklin’s wife. Written with strength and depth—especially refreshing from a male author—Miller is a powerhouse character. She owns Miller’s Bar, a place that immediately reminded me of Cheers, and she presides over the madness with confidence and wit. She’s a true “girl boss,” and I loved how Hall gave her such a commanding, humorous, and influential presence throughout the story.

As I read, I couldn’t help but see hints of other great writers in Hall’s style. There’s a touch of George Orwell in his warnings about AI and technology, plenty of Hunter S. Thompson in the wild, gonzo energy of the narrative, and even a splash of Tina Fey in the sharp, comedic timing. Yet, despite these influences, Hall is clearly carving out his own unique voice—one that feels fresh, bold, and necessary for this world.

This book had me laughing so hard, even in public—people at the airport were staring as I turned the pages. It’s hilarious, insightful, and packed with unforgettable moments. I honestly believe Thomas Hall has crafted not just a debut but a declaration: he’s not simply an “up-and-coming” author, he’s already one of the premier voices of our time.

Do yourself a favor—buy Humor and Madness and experience it for yourself. I loved every minute of this book, and I can’t wait to see what Hall writes next. His voice is one that absolutely needs to be heard.
